[english translation of: The World is a Beautiful Place & I am No Longer Afraid to Die – Formlessness, EP: gehen und bleiben]
If death is a metaphor for change, then birth is a symbolic new beginning. And right in between is the narrow emotional degree on which Formlessness moves. Its creators have a name that is as long as it seems pathetic. The World is a Beautiful Place & I am No Longer Afraid to Die (who are referred to as T & I from here on) started their musical career in 2009, without the knowledge that their unique style would turn them into one of the genre’s best-known bands within just a few years. Contrary to expectations, their poetic title fits in very well with their concept, because T & I stand for the setting of the big existential questions. After a demo in 2010, they released their first professional release in the same year with this EP. In four songs it tells a story about the awakening at a young age, the tormenting decision between go and stay and the moment in which one feels the burden is not so heavy and endlessly mighty at the same time, as if nothing that is yet to come, could be the end of this self-consciousness.
Everyone knows the feeling of a lack of drive, of inactivity, when every tension of the muscles seems in vain. So the narrative begins with Victim Kin Seek Suit on the floor, where they just lie around, in the dark and are thinking of a good friend who has long since went on the run [soft guitar sounds in the background]. He has opened their eyes, but their will is weak, their bodies are the flesh that, like an anchor, keeps them from doing new things. What will become of them now? They ask for light [suddenly, an orchestral outcry, guitar, bass, and drums are wide awake]. Nearby is an apple tree, like an open casket. It stands for all the experiences, all that was that is now to bury.
„Where are you and where have you run to?
Where are you and why do you just come home?“
It’s time to go (Gordon Paul). Something new is to be created. A home can be found in a house that has room for everyone [jazzy guitar play, relaxed drum beat, carefree singing]. This next chapter connects them. It is already clear that it will be part of them forever. They are the actual walls, the rest could actually go away. It needs a renovation. The old must be kicked out or burned entirely [there is excitement, chaotic synth accompaniment, funky riffage, lethargic humming becomes hysterical screaming]. They are not afraid of this task, they talk about it, but when the doorbell rings, they shudder. There is tension in the air that inspires them. This house was just waiting for someone to fill it with life.
„We want to become everything, we’ll shatter as the doorbell rings“
Walnut Street is Dead (Long Live Walnut Street) [Bassline on the guitar] and long live a place of security that has always been there [in between through ride-chatter on the drums]. It is the area where they grew up and gained experience. Yet, their friend seems so far away, but sometimes still ignites the desire for more inside them. He has chosen the safe escape, where no one knows him, he is a blank slate. Good for him, but they have decided to stay. They now can breathe again where the familiar is vanishing before their eyes [optimistic conclusion, dazzling guitars, accompanying drums].
„As for us, we’ve figured out exactly how to breathe
With vanishing lungs like these“
[bright electronic sounds, then a guitar wall, bass and drums reinforce this] (Eyjafjallajokull Dance) The morning light shines through a window. They hope it stays that way for a while [calm, atmospheric synth passage]. Everything just feels right. Nothing bothers them. Why can´t it just stay that way? [melodic guitars, drifty beat of the drums]. For one day they will be heroes, but in the evening they will be full of doubts, haunted by these recurring thoughts. [one last rebellion of all instruments, final drums solo, then fade-out of the guitars] What’s better? To go or stay?
„Open up the window and let the morning light in
I keep holding on, I keep begging myself
Today we are superheroes but tonight we’ll just be tired“
